The terms 'ecological, social, cultural and economic sustainability' are becoming vital issues also in architecture not only because of the foreseeable decline of natural energy resources. This trend is evident from recent developments in both architectural research and education. Yet, the economic sustainability of the built environment, which spans from the early design stages to the demolition of a building, is currently the most encountered aspect in practice. Today, diverse methods and benchmarks are available including various simulation tools to facilitate economic assessments. In this seminar at the Institute of building economics at the University of Stuttgart, Prof. Dr. Stoy, Spiro N. Pollalis, Professor of Design Technology and Management at the renowned Harvard University, and Dr. Dusan Fiala deal with the economic aspects of green buildings using the novel Case Study concept. Each case study is based on carefully selected material representing real projects. The various facets of each case study are discussed in teams, solutions be sought and identified, and, where appropriate, quantified using simulation tools.
Maik W. Neumann supports the team with a comprehensive lecture on the Genzyme Center and the respective Case Study.
